Forestmatic x Forests For Monarchs

Every year, Forests for Monarchs (FFM), a program of La Cruz Habitat Protection Project Inc., works with their local team to collect seeds from existing trees by hand, followed by a nursing process from seed to sapling in the safety of their local established tree nursery. Once saplings are ready to be planted, they are transported to local communities or ejidos and planted with their participation on communal land where they will be looked after, maintained and protected until maturity.

Tree Nursery

With dedicated tree nurseries, seeds are nurtured from seedlings into saplings, before being planted in designated, geo-referenced planting sites.

Quality Assessment

After being planted in accordance with the Framework Species Method, trees are individually tracked and digitized for assessment of quality conditions and survival rates.

Proof of Planting

We provide 1 capture as proof-of-planting of all trees planted that have been positively assessed.

Beyond a
Carbon Offset Project.

Every year the eastern monarch butterfly migrates up to 2500 miles from the US and Canada where they breed to central Mexico to hibernate. Climate change in both their breeding grounds and hibernation grounds coupled with deforestation in Mexico and the conversion of grassland to farmland in the USA and Canada poses threats to this migration.

Project Insight

The Project Description

Since the late 1990s, the monarch butterfly population has fallen dramatically. Through Forests for Monarchs, land is reforested in and around the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve where millions of monarchs spend each winter, and in the Highland Lakes watershed area in Michoacán, Mexico, with the goal of helping to conserve the monarch butterfly winter habitat while aiding the surrounding communities in creating a sustainable livelihood supported by good forest stewardship.

A key focus is protecting and restoring the resilience of the monarch butterfly habitats and biodiversity by stimulating regenerative ecological processes. This project promotes functional diversity and species recruitment with the direct employment of local communities through our partners on the ground. Agroforestry operations are implemented through workshops & active involvement of local communities.

Thanks to sampled direct measurements and an analysis of estimated carbon sequestration, we estimate each tree can contribute to sequestering an average of 36,69Kg CO2e over a 10 years period. Estimations & Conversions
